Dr. Syukuro Manabe, who was a pioneer in developing global climate models to predict global warming and who laid the foundation for current climate study, was the first climatologist to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. The climate models based on his work and those of other researchers have been used as the basis for the IPCC and COPs, and are playing important roles in discussions on courses of action against global warming. This award reflects how critical an issue global warming is for humanity.
Amidst increasing concern about global environmental issues and urgency in addressing them, Future Earth has recently undertaken a bold organizational change to achieve its mission of accelerating the transformation of society toward sustainability through research and innovation.
In Japan, the Future Earth Global Hub Japan and the Regional Center for Asia merged to form the new Future Earth Global Secretariat Hub Japan in August of this year. To mark the occasion, the inaugural meeting of the new Japan Hub and a public mini-symposium “Promoting Future Earth in Japan” will be held as described above. Future Earth’s international initiatives, the reorganized international organization, and the organizations that promote Future Earth in Japan and their activities will be introduced.
